Throbbing bunion footFoot pain got you down?  Are you stuck wearing more sensible shoes due to bunions? Since the leading cause of bunion pain is wearing shoes that are too tight for your feet, buying more sensible shoes could help you find minor relief. But the truth is, bunions are a deformity at the base of your big toe caused by a deviated joint. Bunions can enlarge and grow to be more painful with each step that you take, and when left untreated can lead to arthritis of the joint.  In most severe cases surgery called a bunionectomy would be done, in order to find permanent relief. But there are a variety of treatments and temporary relief options for bunions.

Since the joint at the base of the big toe carries much of your weight when walking, this is why you can have extreme and constant pain.  Shoes are too painful to wear and it seems as though that large bump is getting bigger. Now that your feet are screaming for relief, here are a few ways that can help you find it.

For some, relief may come from simply wearing better shoes that are properly fitted. But for others it may take a number of options to find relief.

  • Use shoe inserts to help position the foot into the shoe correctly.
  • Exercise your foot (ex. Toe stretches, toe flexing, and contracting
  • Wear a moleskin or gel-filled pad to protect the bunion, which can be found at a local drugstore
  • Maintain a healthy, normal weight
  • Use ice packs
  • Buy well-fitted footwear that offers better sole support and a wider fit in the toe area.

Although you may find temporary relief from your bunion pain with these methods, it’s important to remember that bunions do not simply heal, they require proper treatment.  What you want is to relieve the pressure that is being caused and to stop the progressive enlarging of the joint at the base of your toe.

If you or someone you know suffers from pain caused by a bunion and is seeking relief, contact Dr. Fleishman for an appointment to review treatment options.  Call (913) 381-5515 for the Overland Park, KS location or (816) 228-9393 Blue Springs, MO Location.
